Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation

  • Please do not eat or drink (including gum and candy) after midnight the day before your scheduled surgery. If you take prescription medication in the morning, please take it as directed (unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Philibin) using only a sip (2 ounce or less) of water.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please discuss with Dr. Philibin at your consultation visit. Dr. Philibin may prescribe pre-med antibiotics to be taken one hour prior to the surgery.
  • Please hydrate as much as possible for 24-48 hours prior to your surgery.
  • No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, drive the patient home, and stay with the patient after the surgery. **Please park your vehicle in one of the “Oral Surgery” parking spots in front of our building.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing, including a short sleeved shirt, and comfortable, secure walking shoes (no flip-flops, slides or high heels).
  • Do not wear lipstick, lotion, or excessive makeup.
  • Please remove nail polish prior to your appointment. If you have artificial/acrylic nails on, please have the nails removed from the two index fingers prior to your appointment. This is necessary due to an oxygen-monitoring device placed on your finger.
  • Please remove any dental appliance and oral jewelry.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.
  • Have two ice packs frozen to be used upon your arrival home after the surgery.
  • Please arrive for your appointment 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.
